Mission Statement

The Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley (AIMC Berkeley) is dedicated to providing the future practitioner with an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of Oriental medicine while cultivating a strong foundation in Western clinical sciences. This integration provides a pragmatic approach to the synthesis of Eastern and Western medical philosophies and enables AIMC Berkeley graduates to make informed and responsible referral decisions. AIMC Berkeley currently provides an extensive clinical program, offering more than 1,000 hours of training in its clinic and herbal dispensary. Our commitment is to educating students in the skills and knowledge essential to Oriental medical diagnosis, treatment, herbal prescription, and to the understanding of a patient's condition from a Western medical perspective.

History

The Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley was established in San Francisco, California in 1990 by donations from the Meiji Institute of Japan and its alumni. The first class was enrolled in September of 1991. Throughout the years, the College has grown both in size and in its ability to offer students an excellent education in Oriental Medicine. In January 1999, the school relocated to Berkeley in order to provide its students with a higher quality facility and a better educational environment. In April 2003 the College changed its name from Meiji College of Oriental Medicine to Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley. It was accredited by ACAOM under its new name in May 2004.

Programs Offered

AIMC Berkeley offers a Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine.

The academic program at AIMC Berkeley consists of 2,520 hours of lecture and clinical courses. Most of the courses are devoted to the study and practice of acupuncture and Oriental herbal medicine, with the balance of the program concentrating on Oriental and Western clinical sciences. The curriculum is designed so that the courses in TCM theory, acupuncture, Oriental herbology, and Western clinical sciences are taken in conjunction with each other, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Oriental medicine.

The three-year course of study at AIMC Berkeley is equivalent to four academic years. AIMC Berkeley operates year-round on a quarter system, with the majority of students enrolled full-time. The AIMC Berkeley curriculum is arranged sequentially with the result that information learned in one quarter is fundamental to information instructed in courses the following quarters. The full-time course load is heavier than that demanded by many Oriental medical schools. The design of the schedule and curriculum allows students to meet their educational goals and maximize learning by becoming immersed in the program of study.

The Clinical Program at AIMC Berkeley is the practical counterpart to the theoretical and technical skills acquired in the classroom. Nearly half of the AIMC Berkeley curriculum is devoted to clinical practice, with 1,110 clinical practice hours completed within AIMC Berkeley's on-site clinic. The curriculum of AIMC Berkeley is designed so that students have sufficient exposure to acupuncture and herbology techniques before needling patients or prescribing herbs. Each phase of clinical training is coordinated with the lecture courses in order to provide immediate reinforcement of information taught.
