We believe that the traditional art of Chinese medicine offers a potent approach to healthy living for all people. At Kootenay Columbia College of Integrative Health Sciences (KCCIHS) we aim to promote the wisdom of the Chinese medical tradition and to educate healers to be capable partners in an integrated medical system in which traditional Chinese medicine plays a vital role.
Formerly known as the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences (ACOS), KCCIHS's TCM Program adheres to the Yellow Emperor's words concerning the practice of the superior physician: "through oneself know others (yi wo zhi bi)."
Through exploration of the inner reaches of one's own heart, mind and physical self one can find empathy for those in need, allowing a physician to appropriately treat and guide patients to greater health.
Choosing an acupuncture school is one of the most important decisions on the path of becoming a TCM healer. We founded KCCIHS in 1996 as the preeminent school for the development of TCM doctors in North America. The enduring success of our alumni, who now practice in many parts of the world, gives us the confidence to say that we continue to produce doctors with the highest capacity for healing on the continent. Our graduates have written successful licensing exams through the CTCMA and NCCAOM. In 2008, the CTCMA granted our school full unconditional accreditation as a testament to our years of quality TCM education. Use the information provided here and on our website to determine if a KCCIHS education is consistent with your path as a student and as a future TCM professional. Once you have reviewed this site, please feel free to contact KCCIHS with any questions you may have.
Thank you for considering KCCIHS.

With a written history of over 2500 years, Chinese medicine encompasses a vast field of knowledge. Traditional Chinese Medicine students and practitioners will spend a lifetime in pursuit of this knowledge and even then cannot know everything that has been discovered.
The TCM Programs offered at Kootenay Columbia College of Integrative Health Sciences have been designed to match similar programs of study at Chinese medicine universities in the People's Republic of China. These programs are generally 5 or 6 years in length and extremely comprehensive, encompassing not only all modalities of Chinese medicine: acupuncture, Chinese herbs, tui-na massage, qi-gong therapy, diet therapy, but also related Western medicine topics.
In tailoring such programs to suit the North American post-secondary education system, one of our greatest challenges in program delivery has been condensing a historic wealth of knowledge into an appropriate program length. In remaining true to our commitment to the fidelity of traditional Chinese medicine KCCIHS is determined that in order to maintain a program length equivalent to other North American colleges of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is necessary to include a total number of teaching hours exceeding those offered at most North American colleges. We refuse to compromise the tradition of Chinese medicine in the name of economy. As a result, our programs are comprehensive, rigorous and challenging, which is necessary to produce worthy TCM professionals. We are committed to serving students who not only seek excellence, but are also serious, hard-working and diligent.
KCCIHS currently offers four Diploma programs in traditional Chinese medicine including a 5-year program:
- 5-year Doctor of TCM Program - 3,990 hours (completed within 4 1/2 years)
- 4-year TCM Practitioner Program - 3,375 hours
- 3-Year Acupuncturist Program - 2,475 hours
- 3-Year TCM Herbalist Program - 2,437.5 hours
