Mercy College: Program in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Mission Statement

The Mercy College Program in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine trains professionals who are skilled in the practice of acupuncture and Oriental medicine; well-grounded in the body of knowledge and theory that supports the practice; and consciously aware of the healing potential and role of acupuncture and Oriental medicine practice.

History

Mercy College was the first chartered, regionally accredited, academic degree granting college to offer a program in acupuncture and Oriental medicine as part of an integrated interdisciplinary environment. The school's program achieved candidate status from the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 1997, and was accredited in November 2000.

Programs Offered

The Master of Professional Studies in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Mercy College is a full-time, three calendar year professional education program designed to confer a simultaneous Bachelor of Science in Herbal Sciences and MPS degree. The program is completed in nine consecutive trimesters of 15 weeks each. The program is conducted in small classes in an intimate setting.

The Oriental medicine theory, acupuncture points courses, and herbal medicine program are an intense learning experience. The amount of information covered in one semester is substantial. There is an adaptation period during which students must become proficient at both memorizing the material and in grasping unfamiliar concepts. The program involves a mixture of lecture, laboratory, practical hands-on training, and clinical internship. A final dissertation in comparative medicine analysis is required in order to graduate.
