Texas Health & Science University was established to emphasize the traditional and classical understanding of Chinese medicine. THSU has traditionally been one of the few acupuncture programs to teach from the classics such as the Shang Han Lun, Golden Chamber and Four Streams of Scholars, which gives students a solid foundation in authentic Traditional Chinese Medicine. With this foundation, many aspects of natural healing are integrated, including acupuncture, diagnosis, herbology, qigong and tuina.
Texas Health & Science University was the first traditional Chinese medicine college established in Texas. It was founded as the Texas Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1990. The school became a candidate for accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 1994, was accredited in 1996, and changed its name to Texas College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCTCM). The school's program was reaccredited in 2000. TCTCM was awarded two consecutive "Best of the West" prizes by the TCM World Foundation, in 2000 and 2002. In 2013, TCTCM was renamed Texas Health and Science University (THSU) to house both the College of TCM and the College of Business.
THSU's College of Traditional Chinese Medicine offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in TCM. The Bachelor of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine (BSTCM) program prepares students to assist acupuncturists and apply non-needling therapies. The Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) program prepares its graduates for NCCAOM certification and acupuncturist licensing by the state of Texas. The Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) program provides deepened knowledge of TCM and advanced skills in patient assessment and clinical intervention with an emphasis on pain management through multiple modalities. At THSU, all students come to understand how acupuncture is equally as important as herbology, and that working with herbs in conjunction with acupuncture will significantly broaden the scope and efficacy of treatment. THSU is proud to provide the lowest acupuncture tuition in the state of Texas.
THSU's College of Business offers two programs: A traditional MBA and an MBA in Healthcare Management (MBAH). These programs are intended to complement those offered by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, preparing students to excel in established organizations or manage their own businesses if they choose. With our renowned faculty and highly motivated staff, we are committed to the success of every student.
Dual Degrees are also offered to combine knowledge from programs within both colleges. Either MBA program can be combined with the MSAOM or DAOM program. After completion, the student will graduate with two degrees. THSU also offers a dual degree with Zhejiang Chinese Medical University for any student wanting the experience of studying abroad.
The school year is made up of three 15-week trimesters, broken up into spring, summer, and fall classes. While the majority of the college's students are full-time students, other students are employed, or have family or other obligations that take up much of their time. Therefore, accepted students have the opportunity to enroll full-time or part-time.
